อะภิณ์หะปัจจะเวกขะณะปาฐะ Abhiṇhapaccavekkhaṇapāṭha The Recitation of the Constant Reflections Chanted after its prefatory verse; the fuller of the book's two printings of the five reflections. pages 106–107 25 verses

The five themes to be reflected on constantly, given with the Buddha's own explanation of why each is worth reflecting on.

When chanted
Chanted after its prefatory verse; the fuller of the book's two printings of the five reflections.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The book prints the five reflections twice. The other printing gives the bare formulas; this one gives the whole discourse, including the reasoning that follows them. The book prints its own reference for it.

The phrase repeated through the first half is the one that decides who this is for: by a woman or a man, by a householder or by one gone forth. Nothing in the five is monastic.

Meaning and purpose

The five are stated in the same shape each time. I am subject to ageing, I have not gone beyond ageing. Then illness, then death, then separation from everything dear, and last the ownership of one's own actions.

What this printing adds is the argument. Each reflection is followed by an account of what reflecting on it does — which intoxication it undercuts, which conduct it corrects — so the practice is given a stated purpose rather than left as a mood.

The closing verses widen from the first person to everyone: as far as beings come and go, pass away and reappear, all beings are the owners of their actions, heirs to them, born of them. The reflection that began with I am subject to ageing ends by saying the same of everybody, which is the point at which it stops being about oneself.
