อาทิตตะปะริยายะสุตตัง Ādittapariyāyasuttaṃ Chanted after its introductory verse, and at merit-making fifty days after a death. pages 124–126 9 verses

The Fire Sermon: everything is burning — the senses, their objects, the consciousness and the feeling that arise from them.

When chanted
Chanted after its introductory verse, and at merit-making fifty days after a death.
Historical background

The book gives this printing no English title of its own, so the name used in the app is supplied.

Spoken at Gayā to a thousand monks, and by tradition the third teaching given. The book's running order names it as the discourse for the fiftieth day after a death.

Meaning and purpose

The claim is made at once and then unpacked exhaustively: all is burning. And what is the all that is burning? The eye is burning, forms are burning, eye-consciousness is burning, eye-contact is burning — and whatever feeling arises dependent on it.

Then the same for the ear, the nose, the tongue, the body and the mind. Six senses, each with five things burning, and nothing left over. It is the most systematic destruction of a comfortable position in the book.

What follows is not extinguishing the fire but turning away from it: seeing thus, the instructed noble disciple grows disenchanted with the eye, with forms, with eye-consciousness. And the closing line reports what happened while it was being spoken — the minds of the thousand were freed.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying at Gaya, at Gaya's Head, together with a thousand monks. There he addressed them.

Seeing thus, monks, the instructed noble disciple grows disenchanted with the eye, with forms, with eye-consciousness, with eye-contact, and with whatever feeling arises dependent on eye-contact; so too with the ear, the nose, the tongue, the body and the mind, and with all their objects, consciousnesses, contacts and feelings. Being disenchanted he becomes dispassionate; through dispassion he is released; in release there is the knowledge that he is released. He knows: birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done is done, there is no more of this state.

Thus spoke the Blessed One, and those monks delighted in his words. And while this discourse was being spoken, the minds of that thousand of monks were released from the taints through non-clinging.

อาทิตตะปะริยายะสุตตัง นิฏฐิตัง.

The Discourse on Burning is ended.
