อัคคัปปะสาทะสุตตัง Aggappasādasuttaṃ The Discourse on Faith in the Foremost Chanted after its prefatory verse, among the discourses in the collection. pages 112–113 14 verses

The four foremost objects of faith — the Tathāgata, dispassion, the eightfold path and the Sangha — each argued from a whole class.

When chanted
Chanted after its prefatory verse, among the discourses in the collection.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The book prints its own reference. This is the discourse whose prose passages also appear, cut into another chant, in the Parittakaraṇa passage near the front of the book.

Its method is to take a whole category, however wide, and then name one member of it as foremost.

Meaning and purpose

Each of the four is built the same way and the categories are made as large as language allows. As far as there are beings — footless, two-footed, four-footed, many-footed, with form or formless, percipient or not — the Tathāgata is reckoned foremost.

Then, of all states conditioned or unconditioned, dispassion. Of all conditioned states, the noble eightfold path. Of all communities or groups, the Sangha of the Tathāgata's disciples. Nothing is excluded from the comparison before the winner is named.

The closing verses draw the practical conclusion, and it is about giving rather than believing: the wise giver of what is foremost, composed in the foremost Dhamma, whether become a deva or a human, rejoices having reached the foremost. Faith placed in the best is treated as an investment, and the discourse is honest that this is the shape of the argument.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. There the Blessed One addressed the monks: 'Monks.' 'Venerable sir,' those monks replied. The Blessed One said this: 'Monks, there are these four foremost kinds of faith. Which four?'

Monks, as far as there are beings — footless or two-footed or four-footed or many-footed, with form or formless, percipient or non-percipient or neither-percipient-nor-non-percipient — the Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Self-Awakened, is reckoned foremost among them. Those, monks, who have faith in the Buddha have faith in the foremost; and for those with faith in the foremost, the result is foremost.

Monks, as far as there are states conditioned or unconditioned, dispassion is reckoned foremost among them — that is, the crushing of pride, the removal of thirst, the uprooting of clinging, the cutting of the round, the destruction of craving, dispassion, cessation, Nibbāna. Those, monks, who have faith in the Dhamma of dispassion have faith in the foremost; and for those with faith in the foremost, the result is foremost.

Monks, as far as there are conditioned states, the noble eightfold path is reckoned foremost among them — that is, right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. Those, monks, who have faith in the Dhamma of the noble path have faith in the foremost; and for those with faith in the foremost, the result is foremost.

Monks, as far as there are communities or groups, the Sangha of the Tathāgata's disciples is reckoned foremost among them — that is, the four pairs of persons, the eight kinds of individuals. Those, monks, who have faith in the Sangha have faith in the foremost; and for those with faith in the foremost, the result is foremost.

These, monks, are the four foremost kinds of faith. This is what the Blessed One said. Having said this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, further said this:
