อะนัตตะลักขะณะสุตตัง Anattalakkhaṇasuttaṃ Chanted after its introductory verse, and at merit-making seven days after a death. pages 121–123 18 verses

The discourse on not-self, argued through each of the five aggregates in turn, at the end of which the five monks were liberated.

When chanted
Chanted after its introductory verse, and at merit-making seven days after a death.
Historical background

Spoken at Benares in the Deer Park to the group of five — the same audience as the first sermon, and by tradition the second teaching given.

The book's running order names it as the discourse for the seventh day after a death, which is when a family is at its rawest.

Meaning and purpose

The argument is made five times, once per aggregate, and it is an argument rather than an assertion. Form is not-self. If form were self, it would not lead to affliction, and it would be possible to say of form: let my form be thus, let it not be thus.

The test offered is control. What is truly one's own would obey; the body does not obey, and neither do feeling, perception, formations or consciousness. Each is put through the same test and each fails it.

What follows is not despair but disenchantment: seeing thus, the instructed noble disciple grows disenchanted with form, with feeling, and the rest. And the last line reports the outcome — while this discourse was being spoken, the minds of the five were freed. It is chanted at a death partly because it is the text in which somebody heard this and was finished with it.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying at Benares, in the Deer Park at Isipatana. There he addressed the group of five monks.

Seeing thus, monks, the instructed noble disciple grows disenchanted with form, disenchanted with feeling, disenchanted with perception, disenchanted with formations, disenchanted with consciousness. Being disenchanted he becomes dispassionate; through dispassion he is released; in release there is the knowledge that he is released. He knows: birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done is done, there is no more of this state.
