The closing blessing of the Āṭānāṭiya Paritta on its own, wishing freedom from disease, torment and enmity.
- When chanted
- Chanted where a short blessing is wanted, in place of the full paritta.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The full Āṭānāṭiya runs to ninety verses of names and protective formula. This is its last movement printed by itself, which is how it is most often heard.
The book marks it ย่อ — abbreviated — rather than giving it a title of its own, so a reader knows exactly what has been left out.
Meaning and purpose
What survives the abbreviation is the blessing rather than the protection. Freed from all disease, spared from all torment, having passed beyond all enmity — may you be at peace.
Then the four wishes that follow it: may all misfortunes be avoided, may all disease perish, may no danger befall you, may you be happy and long-lived. Short enough to be said over somebody at a doorway.
And the proverb that closes the full version closes this one too: for one habitually respectful, ever honouring elders, four things increase — long life, beauty, happiness and strength. Even abbreviated to six verses, the chant keeps the line that makes the blessing conditional on how somebody behaves.
