An Explanation of the Special Chanting Procedures Read by those learning to conduct ceremonies, alongside the orders it explains. pages 266–268 11 verses

The explanation behind the running orders: what the chanting is for, and how the lustral water and the sacred thread are handled.

When chanted
Read by those learning to conduct ceremonies, alongside the orders it explains.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

Where the pages around it list what to chant, this one says why, and it is the nearest thing in the book to an editorial preface for the whole ceremonial section.

It also covers the two objects that appear at almost every auspicious occasion and are nowhere else explained — the lustral water and the sacred thread.

Meaning and purpose

The purpose is stated in the first line and it is double: that the chanting may bring about auspiciousness and blessing for the host, and that it may be orderly and fitting to the occasion. The second half is about the monks' own conduct — rising, standing and walking in such gatherings so that it accords with the Dhamma and Discipline.

The practical rules are tied to the objects. When lustral water is being made, the Namokāra-aṭṭhaka verses must be chanted; if no water is being made, they need not be. If the sacred thread is used, chant the passage nakkhattayakkhabhūtānaṃ — and the last monk should be ready to gather and wind the thread.

That last detail is the character of the whole page. Somebody has to wind the thread up at the end, and the book says which monk, so that nobody is left holding it. The instructions are written by people who have watched ceremonies go slightly wrong.

The purpose of chanting at the various ceremonies is that it may bring about auspiciousness and blessing for the host of the occasion, and that it may be a fruit of merit for those to whom the host owes gratitude who have passed away. A chanting ceremony is therefore held to be one of the most important of rites; if any religious occasion has no chanting in it, that occasion is held to be of no importance. This being so, monks invited to chant at the various ceremonies must chant correctly according to the procedure and with good order, as something that increases the faith and confidence of the host. For the sake of good order, and that it may succeed as a blessing as intended, there must always be rehearsal together. Besides rehearsing to chant in unison and training the voice to blend evenly, the monk must train himself in sitting, in holding the palms together, in holding the fan, and even in

rising and standing and walking in such gatherings, so that it accords with the Dhamma and Discipline and is orderly and fitting to the occasion. For instance: keeping to proper conduct while chanting, not talking, not letting the eyes wander about the place, keeping the gaze lowered just so much, sitting properly without leaning and without slumping, holding the palms together straight at the level of the chest, not letting the hands drop lower nor raising them higher than that, and restraining the fingers from fidgeting; with mindfulness and clear comprehension governing the mind, so as to chant with respect and regard for the words being chanted.

As for the special procedures not yet explained, they will be set out here as examples, as follows.

4

At an auspicious occasion it is usual to make lustral water and to use the sacred thread as well. So when the chanting begins, as soon as the layman has requested the precepts, the presiding elder takes up the sacred thread and passes it on to each elder in turn down to the last.

5

When lustral water is being made, the Namokāra-aṭṭhaka verses must be chanted — namo arahato sammāsambuddhassa mahesino …. If no lustral water is being made, that is if the host does not wish it and has set out no vessel, the Namokāra-aṭṭhaka verses need not be chanted.

6

In the chanting, if the sacred thread is used, chant the passage nakkhattayakkhabhūtānaṃ. The last monk should be ready to gather and wind the thread, passing it back in turn until it reaches the one presiding, winding it in time so that the thread reaches him exactly as the chanting ends. If many monks are chanting, begin winding the thread from the passage bhavatu sabbamaṅgalaṃ onward. If the sacred thread is not used, the passage nakkhattayakkhabhūtānaṃ need not be chanted, and it ends simply at bhavatu sabbamaṅgalaṃ ….

Dripping the candle into the lustral water is ordinarily the duty of the presiding elder. It is usual to drip the candle when the chanting reaches the Ratana Sutta. That is: when the chanting reaches the Maṅgala Sutta, the host lights the candle and fixes it to the vessel of lustral water, then lifts the vessel and presents it to the presiding elder. When the chanting reaches the Ratana Sutta at ye suppayuttā manasā daḷhena …, the one presiding begins to drip the candle into the water. When the chanting reaches khīṇaṃ purāṇaṃ navaṃ natthi sambhavaṃ, virattacittāyatike bhavasmiṃ, te khīṇabījā aviruḷhichandā, nibbanti dhīrā, he dips

the candle into the water exactly together with the words nibbanti dhīrā, then fixes the candle back on the vessel as before.

At an occasion where there is chanting and a sermon is given after it, the chanting monks do not give the precepts. The host need not take the precepts before listening to the chanting; it begins straight away with the request for the parittas. When the chanting is finished, the precepts are taken first and then the sermon is heard. Giving the precepts at such an occasion is the responsibility of the preacher who gives the sermon.

10

As for the introduction assembling the devas: if it is a royal ceremony and the chanting is in a royal place, begin the introduction at sarajjaṃ sasenaṃ sabandhuṃ narindaṃ … ending dhammassavanakālo ayambhadantā. If it is any other ceremony than a royal one, begin the introduction assembling the devas at pharitvāna mettaṃ sametā onward. Take care — it is easy to slip and begin at parittānubhāvo … instead.

11

If the chanting has no introduction assembling the devas, the Devatā-uyyojana verses need not be chanted — that is dukkhappattā ca niddukkhā … ending gacchantu devatāgatā. If the devas have been invited to assemble, the Devatā-uyyojana verses must always be chanted. The passage sarajjaṃ sasenaṃ sabandhuṃ narindaṃ … is the passage inviting the devas to assemble and rejoice in the ceremony; the passage dukkhappattā ca niddukkhā … is the passage sending the devas back. This is a convention handed down since ancient times.
