The reflection on requisites already used, in the translated printing, with a bracketed note naming each occasion.
- When chanted
- Recited by monastics in the evening on the requisites used during the day; this is the translated printing.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The same reflection printed at page 60 without a translation. What this printing adds, besides the Thai, is a bracketed heading before each section naming the requisite — after using a robe, and so on.
อะตีตะ means past. The reflection exists because the one made at the moment of use is very often not made.
Meaning and purpose
Every section opens with the admission built into its grammar: whatever robe I have used today without reflecting. The text does not ask whether the reflection was made; it assumes it was not.
What follows is the purpose clause of the earlier reflection moved into the past — that was only for warding off cold, heat, the touch of gadflies and the rest. The reflection is applied retrospectively to an act already finished.
A tradition could have insisted the reflection be made at the time and left it there. Instead it wrote a second text for the commoner case and gave it a place in the evening. It is a rule that expects to be forgotten and provides for it.
The chant
As the book prints it: page 234, page 235 and page 236 →
หันทะ มะยัง อะตีตะปัจจะเวกขะณะปาฐัง ภะณามะ เส.
Handa mayaṃ atītapaccavekkhaṇapāṭhaṃ bhaṇāma se.
Now let us recite the passage of reflection after the fact.
(ภายหลังการใช้สอยจีวร)
(after using a robe)
อัชชะ มะยา อะปัจจะเวกขิต๎วา ยัง จีวะรัง ปะริภุตตัง,

Whatever robe I have used today without reflecting,
ตัง ยาวะเทวะ สีตัสสะ ปะฏิฆาตายะ,
Taṃ yāvadeva sītassa paṭighātāya,
จีวรนั้น เรานุ่งห่มแล้ว, เพียงเพื่อบำบัดความหนาว,
that was only for warding off cold,
อุณหัสสะ ปะฏิฆาตายะ,
Uṇhassa paṭighātāya,
เพื่อบำบัดความร้อน,
for warding off heat,

เพื่อบำบัดสัมผัสอันเกิดจากเหลือบ ยุง ลม แดด และสัตว์เลื้อยคลานทั้งหลาย,
for warding off the touch of gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun and creeping things,
ยาวะเทวะ หิริโกปีนะปะฏิจฉาทะนัตถัง.
Yāvadeva hirikopīnapaṭicchādanatthaṃ.
และเพียงเพื่อปกปิดอวัยวะ อันให้เกิดความละอาย,
and only for the sake of covering what modesty conceals.
(ภายหลังการบริโภคบิณฑบาต)
(after eating almsfood)
อัชชะ มะยา อะปัจจะเวกขิต๎วา โย ปิณฑะปาโต ปะริภุตโต,
Ajja mayā apaccavekkhitvā yo piṇḍapāto paribhutto,
บิณฑบาตใด อันเราบริโภคแล้ว, ไม่ทันพิจารณาในวันนี้,
Whatever almsfood I have used today without reflecting,
โส เนวะ ท๎วายะ,
So neva dvāya,
บิณฑบาตนั้นเราบริโภคแล้ว, ไม่ใช่เป็นไปเพื่อความเพลิดเพลิน สนุกสนาน,

ไม่ใช่เป็นไปเพื่อความเมามัน เกิดกำลังพลังทางกาย,

ไม่ใช่เป็นไปเพื่อตกแต่ง,

ยาวะเทวะ อิมัสสะ กายัสสะ ฐิติยา,

and for the support of the holy life,
อิติ ปุราณัญจะ เวทะนัง ปะฏิหังขามิ,
Iti purāṇañca vedanaṃ paṭihaṅkhāmi,
ด้วยการทำอย่างนี้, เราย่อมระงับเสียได้ซึ่งทุกขเวทนาเก่า คือความหิว,
thinking: thus I put an end to the old feeling,
นะวัญจะ เวทะนัง นะ อุปปาเทสสามิ,
Navañca vedanaṃ na uppādessāmi,
และไม่ทำทุกขเวทนาใหม่ให้เกิดขึ้น,
and I shall not give rise to a new feeling,

Yātrā ca me bhavissati anavajjatā ca phāsuvihāro cāti.
อนึ่ง ความเป็นไปโดยสะดวกแห่งอัตภาพนี้ด้วย, ความเป็นผู้หาโทษมิได้ด้วย, และความเป็นอยู่โดยผาสุกด้วย, จักมีแก่เรา ดังนี้.
and I shall have sustenance, blamelessness, and a life of ease.
(ภายหลังการใช้สอยเสนาสนะ)
(after using a lodging)
อัชชะ มะยา อะปัจจะเวกขิต๎วา ยัง เสนาสะนัง ปะริภุตตัง,

Whatever lodging I have used today without reflecting,
ตัง ยาวะเทวะ สีตัสสะ ปะฏิฆาตายะ,
Taṃ yāvadeva sītassa paṭighātāya,
เสนาสนะนั้น เราใช้สอยแล้ว, เพียงเพื่อบำบัดความหนาว,
that was only for warding off cold,
อุณหัสสะ ปะฏิฆาตายะ,

for warding off the touch of gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun and creeping things,
ยาวะเทวะ อุตุปะริสสะยะวิโนทะนัง ปะฏิสัลลานารามัตถัง.
Yāvadeva utuparissayavinodanaṃ paṭisallānārāmatthaṃ.
เพียงเพื่อบรรเทาอันตรายอันจะพึงมีจากดินฟ้าอากาศ, และเพื่อความเป็นผู้ยินดีอยู่ได้, ในที่หลีกเร้นสำหรับภาวนา.
and only for dispelling the perils of the seasons and for delighting in seclusion.
(ภายหลังบริโภคคิลานเภสัช)
(after taking medicine)

Whatever medicine for use in sickness I have used today without reflecting,
โส ยาวะเทวะ อุปปันนานัง เวยยาพาธิกานัง เวทะนานัง ปะฏิฆาตายะ,
So yāvadeva uppannānaṃ veyyābādhikānaṃ vedanānaṃ paṭighātāya,
คิลานเภสัชบริขารนั้น เราบริโภคแล้ว, เพียงเพื่อบำบัดทุกขเวทนา อันบังเกิดขึ้นแล้ว มีอาพาธต่าง ๆ เป็นมูล,
that was only for warding off painful feelings that had arisen,
อัพ๎ยาปัชฌะปะระมะตายาติ.
Abyāpajjhaparamatāyāti.
เพื่อความเป็นผู้ไม่มีโรคเบียดเบียนเป็นอย่างยิ่ง ดังนี้.
and for freedom from affliction as the highest aim.
