ภิกขุอะปะริหานิยะธัมมะสุตตัง Bhikkhuaparihāniyadhammasuttaṃ Chanted after its introductory verse, among the discourses in the collection. pages 116–117 10 verses

Seven conditions under which a community can be expected to grow rather than decline, from meeting often to protecting its guests.

When chanted
Chanted after its introductory verse, among the discourses in the collection.
Historical background

Spoken at Rājagaha on the Vulture's Peak, and each of the seven is introduced by the same phrase — so long as. The whole discourse is a set of conditions rather than instructions.

Nothing in it is about meditation or attainment. It is about how a group of people conduct their business.

Meaning and purpose

The first three concern meeting: so long as the monks meet often and in large numbers; so long as they assemble in concord, rise in concord, and do the Sangha's business in concord; and so long as they neither lay down what has not been laid down nor abolish what has been.

The third of those is a rule about rules, and it cuts both ways. A community declines by inventing new requirements as readily as by abandoning old ones.

The rest concern deference to elders, resistance to craving, attachment to forest dwellings, and the care of fellow monks who have not yet come. Seven conditions, none of them spiritual in the usual sense, and the promise attached is modest: growth is to be expected, not decline.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying at Rajagaha, on the Vulture's Peak. There he addressed the monks: 'Monks, I shall teach you seven conditions that lead to no decline. Listen and attend closely; I shall speak.' 'Yes, venerable sir,' those monks replied. The Blessed One said this: And what, monks, are the seven conditions that lead to no decline?
