The prefatory verse to the paritta of victory, on Māra's army scattered by patience and loving-kindness.
- When chanted
- Chanted immediately before the Jaya Paritta, introducing it.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The last of the prefatory verses in the Twelve Tamnan, introducing the twelfth and final paritta. It returns to the scene under the Bodhi tree that the collection has referred to throughout.
What it emphasises about that scene is not the awakening but the defence.
Meaning and purpose
The scale of the attack is given first and it is specific: Māra's army came on, twelve leagues deep on every side. A number is supplied where a vaguer word would have done.
What met it is named just as specifically, and it is not power. ขันติเมตตาอะธิฏฐานา — resolved on patience and loving-kindness — and with that the One with Vision scattered them. The victory the whole final paritta is named for was won by two qualities anybody could in principle practise.
The verse then widens past the event: for the safety, the welfare and the happiness of all, beginning with those still bound to the round. Having brought the Buddha's work to completion, it hands over — and the collection ends on the same terms it began on, with safety asked for everybody rather than for the reciters.
