พุทธชัยมังคลคาถา (ถวายพรพระ) pút-tá-chai-maŋ-ká-lá-kaa-tǎa (tà-wǎai pɔɔn prá) Chanted at the offering of a meal and at almost any ceremony of blessing; this is the translated printing. pages 203–205 9 verses

The eight verses of the Buddha's victory in the translated printing, each naming an adversary and the quality that overcame him.

When chanted
Chanted at the offering of a meal and at almost any ceremony of blessing; this is the translated printing.
Historical background

The same eight verses printed at page 44, here with their Thai. The book gives this printing no English title of its own — the entry carries a Thai title and a romanisation but no title_english — so the name used in this app is supplied.

Its Thai title names the occasion as well as the text: พุทธชัยมังคลคาถา (ถวายพรพระ), which is where these verses are actually heard.

Meaning and purpose

The design is in the answers, and no two are alike. Māra with his thousand arms was overcome by giving; Āḷavaka by patience and self-taming; the maddened elephant Nāḷāgiri by loving-kindness; Aṅgulimāla by psychic power; the slander of Ciñcā by peaceful means; Saccaka by wisdom; the nāga by instruction; and the brahmā Baka by knowledge.

Not one of the eight is overcome by force, and the adversaries are deliberately unlike each other — a temptation, a rage, an animal, a murderer, a lie, an argument, a spirit, and a god with a mistaken idea.

The ninth verse turns to the reciter and recommends the poem to them: whoever recites or calls these to mind day after day will put away obstacles. Read with the Thai beneath, the eight become something a person can actually use — a catalogue of eight kinds of trouble and eight different answers.
