พุทธาภิคีติ Buddhābhigīti The Chant in Praise of the Buddha Chanted in the evening service after the recollection of the Buddha; this is the translated printing. pages 226–228 19 verses

The hymn in praise of the Buddha in the translated printing, the first of the three evening hymns.

When chanted
Chanted in the evening service after the recollection of the Buddha; this is the translated printing.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

From page 193 the book prints its material a second time with a Thai rendering beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first.

The first of the three hymns and the one that sets their pattern. All three are the same length and, from the fifth verse, the same words with the object changed.

Meaning and purpose

The opening is in a register found nowhere else in the daily services: joined to the highest qualities, in whose being purity, higher knowing and compassion have come together, who awakened the good folk as the sun awakens the lotus.

What follows turns personal in a way the morning service never does. I am the Buddha's servant; the Buddha is my lord and master; to the Buddha I surrender this body and this life; for me there is no other refuge. Nothing in these lines is hedged, and with the Thai beneath nothing can be passed over as formula.

The last movement is announced by an instruction printed on the page rather than chanted — prostrate together, then chant with the voice lowered. What is said in that lowered voice is not praise but the request for pardon. The day's last act of the service is to ask to be excused the day.
