Praise of the Buddha in the translated printing: one long sentence of epithets and deeds, landing on an offering and a bow.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the morning service after the preliminary homage; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The same chant printed at page 2 without a translation. This printing divides it into eighteen units against the earlier nine, because the Thai is set as its own units.
The file records that the two passes divide the same text differently, and that this is not a discrepancy to be reconciled.
Meaning and purpose
The chant is one suspended sentence. It opens โย โส ตะถาคะโต — that Tathāgata — and does not complete itself until the reciter says what he does about it: to that Blessed One I make offering, to that Blessed One I bow my head.
Between them come the epithets and then the deeds — he made this world known with its gods, its Māras and its Brahmās, having realised it himself through direct knowledge, and taught a Dhamma admirable in beginning, middle and end.
The Thai layer changes how the suspension is experienced. In Pali the sentence hangs unresolved for nine clauses; with a rendering beneath each, a reader can follow what is being accumulated and feel the sentence land, which is the effect the original assumes and only a Pali speaker would otherwise get.
