The recollection of the Buddha in the translated printing: the good report and the nine epithets.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the evening service as the first recollection; this is the translated printing.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
From page 193 the book prints its material a second time with a Thai rendering beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first.
It opens with its own invitation — now let us make the recollection of the Buddha — which the first-pass printing at page 52 does not carry.
Meaning and purpose
The frame is what to notice. It begins ตัง โข ปะนะ — and this good report has gone abroad concerning that Blessed One — so the epithets arrive as something said of him rather than as a definition.
The nine follow, and this printing gives each its own unit: worthy; perfectly enlightened by himself; accomplished in knowledge and conduct; well-farer; knower of the worlds; unsurpassed trainer; teacher of gods and men; awakened; blessed.
Because the qualities are introduced as a report, the reciter is not asserting them on their own authority but repeating what has been said. That is what makes this an act of recollection rather than a claim — and with the Thai beneath, a reader can see the difference the frame makes.
