จะตุรัปปะมัญญาปาโฐ Caturappamaññāpāṭho Chanted after its introductory verse, among the passages on practice. pages 118–119 6 verses

The four immeasurables set out in full: loving-kindness, compassion, gladness and equanimity pervading every direction.

When chanted
Chanted after its introductory verse, among the passages on practice.
Historical background

Each of the four is given the same paragraph with one word changed, and the paragraph is long. The repetition is the practice rather than a stylistic habit.

The book gives this printing no English title of its own, so the name used in the app is supplied.

Meaning and purpose

The pattern is spatial and exhaustive: dwelling pervading one direction with a heart imbued with loving-kindness, likewise the second, the third and the fourth; so above, below and around, everywhere and to all as to himself.

Then the same again for compassion, for gladness, and for equanimity. Nothing is added and nothing abbreviated, so a reciter goes round the compass four times.

Read as text it is repetitive; chanted, it is a set of instructions being followed in real time. The four directions, then above and below, then everywhere — a person doing this properly is not reciting a description of the practice but performing it while saying so.

There are, declared by the Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One, four immeasurables rightly proclaimed.

Here a monk dwells pervading one direction with a heart imbued with loving-kindness, likewise the second, the third and the fourth; so above, below, across, everywhere, to all as to himself, he dwells pervading the whole world with a heart imbued with loving-kindness — abundant, exalted, measureless, without hostility, without ill will.
