ทะสะนาถะกะระณะธัมมะสุตตัง Dasanāthakaraṇadhammasuttaṃ The Discourse on the Ten Refuge-Makers Chanted after its prefatory verse, among the discourses in the collection. pages 103–105 13 verses

Ten qualities that make a monk one who has a refuge, from virtue and learning to good friends and being easy to admonish.

When chanted
Chanted after its prefatory verse, among the discourses in the collection.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The ten are given in the standard sutta frame — thus have I heard, the setting at Sāvatthī, the Buddha addressing the monks — and each is introduced with the same phrase: and further, monks.

What holds them together is stated at the end rather than the beginning, which is why the discourse repays hearing whole.

Meaning and purpose

The list begins where the tradition usually begins, with virtue and with learning: a monk is virtuous, restrained by the Pātimokkha, seeing danger in the slightest fault; and he has learned much, retains what he has heard and stores it up.

Then it turns sociable in a way lists of this kind often do not. He has good friends, good companions, good associates. He is easy to speak to, patient, and takes instruction respectfully. He is deft and unlazy in whatever duties there are for his fellows in the holy life. Three of the ten are about how he is to live with other people.

The closing instruction is the sharpest sentence in it: dwell as those who have a refuge, monks, not as those without one — one without a refuge dwells in suffering. Having a refuge is not described as comfort or as safety. It is described as the alternative to a particular kind of misery.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. There the Blessed One addressed the monks: 'Monks.' 'Venerable sir,' those monks replied. The Blessed One said this: 'Monks, dwell as those who have a refuge, not as those without one. One without a refuge, monks, dwells in suffering. There are these ten refuge-making qualities, monks. Which ten?'

Here, monks, a monk is virtuous; he dwells restrained by the restraint of the Pātimokkha, perfect in conduct and resort, seeing danger in the slightest fault, and trains in the training rules he has undertaken. That a monk is virtuous in this way — this too is a refuge-making quality.

And further, monks, a monk has learned much, retains what he has heard and stores it up; those teachings which are good in the beginning, good in the middle and good at the end, which proclaim with meaning and phrasing the wholly complete and purified holy life — such teachings he has learned much of, retained, recited aloud, pondered in mind and penetrated well by view. That a monk is learned in this way — this too is a refuge-making quality.
