The verses that close a paritta service by sharing its merit with the devas and sending them away.
- When chanted
- Chanted at the very end of a paritta service, after the last paritta.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The service opened by calling the devas of every world-system to come and listen. This is the other half of that: อุยโยชะนะ means dismissing or sending away, and the chant releases them.
A gathering that has been formally convened has to be formally closed. These eight verses are how the tradition does it, and they make the whole service a bracket rather than a stream of texts.
Meaning and purpose
It opens by wishing well to everyone rather than to the guests: may those who have met with suffering be free of suffering, those who have met with fear be free of fear, those who have met with grief be free of grief — may every living being be so. The three are specific and they cover most of why anybody attends such a service.
Then the merit is handed over. By this much of the attainment of merit gathered by us, may all the devas rejoice, for the winning of every blessing. The word เอตตาวะตา, by this much, is a measured phrase — no claim is made about how much merit there was.
The last verses do something unexpected with the departing guests: may they give gifts with faith, may they keep the precepts always. The devas are not merely thanked and dismissed. They are wished a practice of their own, on the way out.
