The verses dismissing the devas at the close of the Seven Tamnan, ending by binding a protection on every side.
- When chanted
- Chanted at the very end of a Seven Tamnan service.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The Seven Tamnan is the shorter of the two great paritta collections. Its texts are the same as those of the Twelve Tamnan; what differs is which are included and how far each is cut, and the book's three running orders shorten them further again.
The service opened by calling the devas of every world-system. This is the other half of that: a gathering formally convened has to be formally closed.
Meaning and purpose
It opens by wishing well to everyone rather than to the guests: may those who have come to suffering be free of suffering, those who have come to fear be free of fear, those who have come to sorrow be free of sorrow — may all living beings be so.
Then the merit of the service is handed over to the devas, and they are wished a practice of their own on the way out. They are not merely thanked and dismissed.
The last line is what this printing adds and it is the strongest sentence in the chant: by the might of the arahants, I bind a protection on every side. The service ends by describing what the whole of it has built.
