The Banner Crest Protection abridged: the Buddha's instruction to recollect him, the Dhamma or the Sangha when afraid.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the Seven Tamnan, and wherever fear needs answering.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The Seven Tamnan is the shorter of the two great paritta collections. Its texts are the same as those of the Twelve Tamnan; what differs is which are included and how far each is cut, and the book's three running orders shorten them further again. The book marks this printing as the abridged form in its own title.
The book prints its own reference. What the abridgement drops is the story of Sakka and the banner; what it keeps is the instruction that story was told to correct.
Meaning and purpose
It opens on the recollection itself — such indeed is the Blessed One: worthy, perfectly self-awakened, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, well-gone — the same formula recited every evening.
Then the promise attached to it, stated directly: when you recollect me, whatever fear or terror or standing of the hair may arise will be abandoned. The third item is the detail that makes it credible. The sutta is talking about the body's response, not about being brave.
The same is then said of the Dhamma and of the Sangha, and the chant ends by repeating the promise in the negative: no fear, no terror, no standing of the hair will there be.
The chant

Such indeed is the Blessed One: worthy, perfectly self-awakened, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, well-gone, knower of the world, unexcelled trainer of those who can be trained, teacher of devas and humans, awakened, blessed.

For, monks, when you recollect me, whatever fear or terror or standing of the hair may arise will be abandoned. If you do not recollect the Dhamma, then recollect the Sangha.

Well proclaimed by the Blessed One is the Dhamma: visible here and now, timeless, inviting one to come and see, leading onward, to be known for oneself by the wise.

The Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples has practised well, has practised straightly, has practised rightly, has practised properly — that is, the four pairs of persons, the eight kinds of individuals. This Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples is worthy of gifts, of hospitality, of offerings, of reverential salutation; it is the unsurpassed field of merit for the world.
