ธะชัคคะปะริตตัง ธะชัคคะสุตตัง สัตตะมัง Dhajaggaparittaṃ dhajaggasuttaṃ sattamaṃ The Dhajagga Paritta, the Dhajagga Sutta, the Seventh Chanted in the paritta service after its prefatory verse, and used wherever fear needs answering. pages 90–92 80 verses

The Buddha tells how the devas were told to look at their king's banner in battle, and gives his followers a better thing to look at.

When chanted
Chanted in the paritta service after its prefatory verse, and used wherever fear needs answering.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The book prints its own reference. ธะชัคคะ means the top of a banner, and the whole sutta turns on that image — what a frightened person is told to look up at.

It is built as a story with a correction inside it. The Buddha recounts what Sakka told the devas to do when afraid, and then says why that advice was not good enough.

Meaning and purpose

In the story, Sakka tells the devas that if fear arises in battle they should look at the top of his banner, or at the banner of one of the other deva kings, and their fear will go. The Buddha repeats the advice fully and fairly before touching it.

Then the correction, and it is not a rejection but a diagnosis. Looking at Sakka's banner may or may not remove fear, because Sakka is not free of lust, hatred and delusion — he is frightened himself. Advice is only as good as the person giving it, and the sutta says so about a god.

What is offered instead is the recollection of the Buddha, the Dhamma or the Sangha, and the promise attached is stated three times over in the same words: there will be no fear, no trembling and no horripilation. The last of those is the detail that makes it credible — the sutta is talking about the body's response, not about being brave.
