ธัมมาภิคีติ Dhammābhigīti The Chant in Praise of the Dhamma Chanted in the evening service after the recollection of the Dhamma; this is the translated printing. pages 229–230 19 verses

The hymn in praise of the Dhamma in the translated printing, the second of the three evening hymns.

When chanted
Chanted in the evening service after the recollection of the Dhamma; this is the translated printing.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

From page 193 the book prints its material a second time with a Thai rendering beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first.

Its opening stanza is its own; from the fifth verse it follows the hymn to the Buddha word for word, changing only its object. The book prints each of the three in full rather than abbreviating.

Meaning and purpose

The opening image is of holding rather than of light, though it uses both: the Dhamma holds up those who hold to it and keeps them from falling into the wretched worlds, and it is saluted as the dispeller of darkness.

Then the shared template, and it reads differently when the object is a teaching rather than a person. I am the Dhamma's servant; the Dhamma is my lord and master; to the Dhamma I surrender this body and this life. Calling oneself the servant of a teaching is a stranger thing than it looks, and the verses do not soften it.

It ends with the prostration, the lowered voice and the request for pardon — whatever wrong has been done towards the Dhamma, which in practice means neglect of it, brought into the open before the service goes on.
