ธัมมาภิถุติ Dhammābhithuti Praise of the Dhamma Chanted in the morning service after the recollection; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation. pages 196–197 8 verses

Praise of the Dhamma in the translated printing, on the six qualities recollected of it.

When chanted
Chanted in the morning service after the recollection; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

From page 193 the book prints its material a second time, now with a Thai rendering set beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first.

It is the middle of the three praises, and by far the shortest. The translated printing divides it into eight units where the first pass used three, because the Thai is set as units of its own.

Meaning and purpose

The six qualities describe the teaching by what can be done with it: well proclaimed, visible here and now, timeless, inviting all to come and see, leading onwards, and to be known each for himself by the wise.

The Thai rendering has to expand several of these to be intelligible — อะกาลิโก is one word in Pali and needs a clause in Thai — and that expansion is exactly what a reader following the second half of the book is here for.

The last quality is the one the others rest on, and it is why an assembly can chant this together without anybody speaking for anybody else. The knowing is each person's own, and cannot be held on another's behalf.
