Dhammacakkappavattanasuttaṃ The Discourse on Setting the Wheel of Dhamma Rolling Chanted at birthday merit-making and wherever the first teaching is wanted; among the most chanted discourses in the tradition. pages 159–163 42 verses

The first sermon: the two extremes, the middle way, the four noble truths in three phases, and Koṇḍañña's understanding.

When chanted
Chanted at birthday merit-making and wherever the first teaching is wanted; among the most chanted discourses in the tradition.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The book prints its own reference. This is the discourse everything else in the collection refers back to, and the one the tradition dates its beginning from.

Its structure is unusually tight for a sutta: a rejection, a definition, a fourfold analysis worked through three times, and then a result.

Meaning and purpose

It opens by clearing the ground. There are two extremes that should not be followed — the pursuit of sensual happiness, and the pursuit of self-mortification — and the middle way avoids both. The middle way is then defined, and it turns out to be the noble eightfold path already familiar from elsewhere in this book.

The four truths are then each taken through three phases: what the truth is, what it requires, and that it has been done. Suffering is to be understood, and has been understood; its origin is to be abandoned, and has been abandoned. Twelve moves in all, and the Buddha says his awakening was not claimed until all twelve were complete.

The end is narrative and is why this discourse is loved. Koṇḍañña understands, and the Blessed One exclaims twice — Koṇḍañña has indeed understood. And so he came to be called Aññā Koṇḍañña, Koṇḍañña Who Understood. A man is renamed for having followed an argument.

Evamme sutaṃ. Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā bārāṇasiyaṃ viharati isipatane migadāye. Tatra kho bhagavā pañcavaggiye bhikkhū āmantesi.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Bārāṇasī, in the deer park at Isipatana. There the Blessed One addressed the group of five monks.

2

Dveme bhikkhave antā pabbajitena na sevitabbā. Yo cāyaṃ kāmesu kāmasukhallikānuyogo hīno gammo pothujjaniko anariyo anatthasañhito. Yo cāyaṃ attakilamathānuyogo dukkho anariyo anatthasañhito.

There are these two extremes, monks, that should not be followed by one who has gone forth. There is this pursuit of sensual happiness in sensual pleasures, which is low, coarse, the way of ordinary people, ignoble, and brings no good. And there is this pursuit of self-mortification, which is painful, ignoble, and brings no good.

Avoiding both these extremes, monks, the middle way discovered by the Tathāgata gives rise to vision and to knowledge, and leads to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna.

And what, monks, is that middle way discovered by the Tathāgata, which gives rise to vision and to knowledge, and leads to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna?

It is this very noble eightfold path. That is to say: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

Ayaṃ kho sā bhikkhave majjhimā paṭipadā tathāgatena abhisambuddhā, cakkhukaraṇī ñāṇakaraṇī, upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṃvattati.

This, monks, is that middle way discovered by the Tathāgata, which gives rise to vision and to knowledge, and leads to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna.

Idaṃ kho pana bhikkhave dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ. Jātipi dukkhā, jarāpi dukkhā, maraṇampi dukkhaṃ, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsāpi dukkhā, appiyehi sampayogo dukkho, piyehi vippayogo dukkho, yampicchaṃ na labhati tampi dukkhaṃ, saṅkhittena pañcuppādānakkhandhā dukkhā.

Now this, monks, is the noble truth of suffering. Birth is suffering, ageing is suffering, death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair are suffering; union with what is disliked is suffering, separation from what is liked is suffering, not getting what one wants is suffering; in short, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering.

8

Now this, monks, is the noble truth of the arising of suffering. It is this craving which leads to renewed becoming, accompanied by delight and lust, delighting now here now there — that is to say, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for becoming, craving for non-becoming.

Now this, monks, is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering. It is the remainderless fading away and cessation of that same craving, the giving up of it, the letting go of it, freedom from it, non-reliance upon it.

10

Now this, monks, is the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering.

This is what the Blessed One said. Satisfied, the group of five monks delighted in his words. And while this exposition was being spoken, there arose in the venerable Koṇḍañña the dust-free, stainless eye of Dhamma: whatever is subject to arising is subject to cessation.

At Bārāṇasī, in the deer park at Isipatana, the unsurpassed Wheel of Dhamma has been set rolling by the Blessed One, and it cannot be stopped by any ascetic or brahmin, by any deva or Māra or Brahmā, by anyone at all in the world.

So in that moment, in that instant, the cry reached as far as the Brahmā world. And this ten-thousandfold world system shook, quaked and trembled, and a boundless, magnificent radiance appeared in the world, surpassing the majesty of the devas.

Athakho bhagavā udānaṃ udānesi. Aññāsi vata bho koṇḍañño, aññāsi vata bho koṇḍaññoti.

Then the Blessed One uttered this exclamation: Koṇḍañña has indeed understood! Koṇḍañña has indeed understood!

And so it was that the venerable Koṇḍañña came to be called Aññā Koṇḍañña — Koṇḍañña Who Understood.
