Verses on revering the Dhamma, and on the fragrance of virtue, which unlike sandalwood or jasmine travels against the wind.
- When chanted
- Chanted among the general chants of the book, following the verses on the treasure store.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The chant opens by settling its argument before making it. Those fully awakened ones who have been, those yet to come, and the one awakened now — all of them dwelt, dwell and will dwell revering the true Dhamma, and this, it says, is เอสา พุทธานะ ธัมมะตา, the nature of Buddhas.
After that opening it is plainly a compilation. The verses move through several distinct subjects, each finished before the next begins: how hard the good path is to follow, where the good and the bad end up, the protection that Dhamma gives, and then a long sequence on fragrance. The book prints no footnote and no citation for any of it.
Meaning and purpose
The opening argues from precedent rather than from authority. It does not say the Dhamma should be revered because it is true; it says that every Buddha there has been or will be revered it, and therefore one who wishes for greatness should do likewise.
The hinge of the chant is ธัมโม หะเว รักขะติ ธัมมะจาริง — Dhamma protects the one who lives by Dhamma. Read carefully it is a statement about consequence rather than a promise of intervention: what protects is the living by it, not a power that watches over those who do.
The fragrance sequence is the part people remember, and it earns its place. The scent of flowers does not travel against the wind, nor sandalwood, nor tagara, nor jasmine — but the fragrance of the good does, and perfumes every quarter. Then the closing image: a lotus springing up on a rubbish heap beside the highway, and so the disciple among blind ordinary folk. The verses give virtue a public dimension without making it a performance. They say a life is noticed, not that it should set out to be.
The chant

ye ca atītā sambuddhā ye ca buddhā anāgatā
Those fully awakened ones who have been, and those Buddhas yet to come,
yo cetarahi sambuddho bahunnaṃ sokanāsano.
and he who is fully awakened now, destroyer of the sorrow of many —
sabbe saddhammagaruno vihariṃsu vihāti ca
all of them dwelt, and dwell, revering the true Dhamma;
athāpi viharissanti esā buddhāna dhammatā.
and so too they will dwell. This is the nature of Buddhas.
tasmā hi attakāmena mahattamabhikaṅkhatā
Therefore one who loves himself, who aspires to greatness,
saddhammo garukātabbo saraṃ buddhāna sāsanaṃ.
should revere the true Dhamma, remembering the teaching of the Buddhas.
duddadaṃ dadamānānaṃ dukkaraṃ kammakubbataṃ
Of those who give what is hard to give, who do what is hard to do,
asanto nānukubbanti sataṃ dhammo duranvayo.
the bad do not follow suit; the way of the good is hard to follow.
tasmā satañca asatañca nānā hoti ito gati
And so the destination from here differs for the good and for the bad:
asanto nirayaṃ yanti santo saggaparāyanā.
the bad go to hell; the good have heaven as their destination.
na hi dhammo adhammo ca ubho ca samavipākino
For Dhamma and what is against Dhamma do not ripen alike:
adhammo nirayaṃ neti, dhammo pāpeti sugatiṃ.
what is against Dhamma leads to hell; Dhamma brings one to a good destination.
dhammo have rakkhati dhammacāriṃ
Dhamma indeed protects the one who lives by Dhamma;
dhammo suciṇṇo sukhamāvahāti.
Dhamma well practised brings happiness.
esānisaṃso dhamme suciṇṇe
This is the benefit of Dhamma well practised:
na duggatiṃ gacchanti dhammacārī.
one who lives by Dhamma does not go to a bad destination.
na pupphagandho paṭivātameti
The scent of flowers does not travel against the wind,
na candanaṃ tagaramallikā vā.
nor sandalwood, nor tagara, nor jasmine.
satañca gandho paṭivātameti
But the fragrance of the good does travel against the wind;
sabbā disā sappuriso pavāyati.
a true person perfumes every quarter.
candanaṃ tagaraṃ vāpi uppalaṃ atha vassikī
Sandalwood or tagara, the blue lotus, or the jasmine —
etesaṃ gandhajātānaṃ sīlagandho anuttaro.
of all these kinds of fragrance, the fragrance of virtue is unsurpassed.
appamatto ayaṃ gandho yvāyaṃ tagaracandani
Slight is this fragrance, that of tagara and sandalwood;
yo ca sīlavataṃ gandho vāti devesu uttamo.
but the fragrance of the virtuous blows even among the gods, and is supreme.
tesaṃ sampannasīlānaṃ appamādavihārinaṃ
Of those perfect in virtue, who dwell in heedfulness,
sammadaññā vimuttānaṃ māro maggaṃ na vindati.
liberated by right knowledge, Māra cannot find the path.
yathā saṅkāradhānasmiṃ ujjhitasmiṃ mahāpathe
Just as on a rubbish heap, cast aside beside the highway,
padumaṃ tattha jāyetha sucigandhaṃ manoramaṃ.
a lotus may spring up, sweet-scented and delighting the heart —
evaṃ saṅkārabhūtesu andhabhūte puthujjane
so among those who have become as rubbish, among blind ordinary folk,
atirocati paññāya sammāsambuddhasāvakoti.
the disciple of the Fully Awakened One shines out in wisdom.
dhammagāravādigāthā niṭṭhitā.
Here end the Verses on Reverence for the Dhamma.
