The reflection on the elements and on repulsiveness, in the translated printing: the requisites and their user alike are merely elements.
- When chanted
- Recited by monastics among the reflections on the requisites; this is the translated printing.
Historical background
From page 193 the book prints its material a second time with a Thai rendering beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first. The book gives this printing no English title of its own, so the name used in the app is supplied.
The book prints this reflection twice, at page 61 without a translation and here with one. The app holds both, one entry per printing, because what it shows must be what each page shows.
Meaning and purpose
The first move is applied evenly, and the evenness is what gives it force. These are mere elements, occurring according to their conditions — that is, this robe; and the person using it is mere elements too, not a being, not a soul, empty. The user is taken apart in the same sentence as the thing used.
The second move is stranger and more exact. The robes are not in themselves repulsive; yet on reaching this foul body they become exceedingly so. The repulsiveness is not in the object and not quite in the body either — it arises at the contact.
None of this is disgust at food or clothing, which the text rules out by saying they are not repulsive in themselves. What is undercut is the sense of there being someone to whom nice things are happening, and the four requisites are the last place a monastic's preferences can quietly operate.
The chant
As the book prints it: page 207, page 208 and page 209 →
