The long chant for putting out the victory candle, ending by wishing the hearer quenched as the lamp is quenched.
- When chanted
- Chanted at the quenching of the victory candle, closing a major auspicious ceremony.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
Forty-one units against the four that lit it. The disproportion is the point: the ceremony has happened in between, and the closing gathers up everything that was chanted during it.
Much of it is assembled from chants printed elsewhere in the book — the refuge verses, the Jayaparitta, the Āṭānāṭiya blessing — which is why a reader will keep meeting familiar lines.
Meaning and purpose
It opens on the threefold declaration of refuge, one Jewel at a time, each followed by the same line: by the speaking of this truth, may the blessing of victory be yours. Three truths, three blessings.
The body of it then runs through the protective material of the whole occasion in compressed form, so that a ceremony which has taken hours is recapitulated as it ends.
The last line is the one the chant exists for, and it turns the candle into the simile: freed from every illness, spared every burning torment, having passed beyond all enmity — may you be quenched as this lamp is quenched. The flame is put out at that moment, and นิพพุติ, the quenching, is the tradition's own word for the goal. A ceremony about prosperity ends by wishing somebody extinguished.
