พระคาถาชินบัญชร prá-kaa-tǎa chin-ná-ban-chɔɔn The Verses of the Victor's Cage Chanted for protection; the most widely recited of all such texts in Thailand. pages 237–238 37 verses

The Jinapañjara in Thai script: the Buddhas and great disciples stationed at every part of the body, forming a cage of protection.

When chanted
Chanted for protection; the most widely recited of all such texts in Thailand.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The book prints this twice, here in Thai script and again in the roman-script appendix. This printing is slightly longer, because it carries an instruction the other does not.

ชินบัญชร is the Victor's cage or lattice — a structure built out of holy beings with the reciter inside it.

Meaning and purpose

It opens on the promise of sons and wealth, which is unlike anything else in this book, and then — in this printing only — an instruction in brackets: then develop the meditation. The chant is marked as the preliminary to something, not the whole of it.

The stationing that follows is anatomical and exact. The twenty-eight Buddhas established upon the head; then the Buddha on the head, the Dhamma in the two eyes, and onward through the body with a named disciple at each place.

The last line is in the present tense and describes a place the reciter is now inside: guarded by the power of the true Dhamma, I live in the Victor's cage. What has been built during the chanting is not a wish but, on the text's own account, a structure.
