The ten perceptions the Buddha gave Ānanda to recite to the sick Girimānanda, on hearing which his illness subsided.
- When chanted
- Chanted for the sick, and among the longer discourses in the collection.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
Ānanda asks the Buddha to visit a gravely ill monk, and instead of going he sends a list. The discourse is what he sent.
It belongs with the Bojjhaṅga discourses printed earlier in the book — the same use, the same reported outcome — but where those name seven factors, this names ten perceptions.
Meaning and purpose
Each perception is introduced with the same question and set in the same place: here a bhikkhu, gone to a forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, reflects. What is being described is a practice done alone and deliberately, not a mood.
The ten run from impermanence and not-self through unattractiveness — reviewing this very body upward from the soles of the feet and downward from the crown — to danger, dispassion, cessation and the mindfulness of breathing. None of them is consoling and none mentions the illness.
The frame is what makes the chant usable. If, Ānanda, you go to the bhikkhu Girimānanda and speak to him of these ten perceptions, it is possible that on hearing them his affliction may subside. It is possible — not it will. And the last line reports what happened when Ānanda did it.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now on that occasion the venerable Girimānanda was sick, afflicted, gravely ill. Then the venerable Ānanda went to the Blessed One, paid homage, sat down to one side, and said this to him:

'Venerable sir, the venerable Girimānanda is sick, afflicted, gravely ill. It would be good if the Blessed One would go to him, out of compassion.' 'If, Ānanda, you go to the bhikkhu Girimānanda and speak to him of ten perceptions, it is possible that on hearing them his affliction will subside on the spot. Which ten? The perception of impermanence, of not-self, of unattractiveness, of danger, of abandoning, of dispassion, of cessation, of disenchantment with the whole world, of impermanence in all formations, and mindfulness of breathing.

And what, Ānanda, is the perception of impermanence? Here a bhikkhu, gone to a forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, reflects thus: form is impermanent, feeling is impermanent, perception is impermanent, formations are impermanent, consciousness is impermanent. Thus he dwells contemplating impermanence in these five aggregates of clinging. This, Ānanda, is called the perception of impermanence.

And what is the perception of not-self? Here a bhikkhu, gone to a forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, reflects thus: the eye is not-self, forms are not-self; the ear is not-self, sounds are not-self; the nose is not-self, odours are not-self; the tongue is not-self, tastes are not-self; the body is not-self, tangibles are not-self; the mind is not-self, mind-objects are not-self. Thus he dwells contemplating not-self in these six internal and external sense bases. This is called the perception of not-self.

And what is the perception of unattractiveness? Here a bhikkhu reviews this very body, upward from the soles of the feet and downward from the tips of the hair, bounded by skin and full of many kinds of impurity: in this body there are head-hairs, body-hairs, nails, teeth, skin; flesh, sinews, bones, bone-marrow, kidneys; heart, liver, membrane, spleen, lungs; bowels, entrails, undigested food, excrement; bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat; tears, grease, spittle, snot, oil of the joints, urine. Thus he dwells contemplating unattractiveness in this body. This is called the perception of unattractiveness.

And what is the perception of danger? Here a bhikkhu, gone to a forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, reflects thus: this body is a mass of suffering, beset with much danger; for in this body many kinds of affliction arise — diseases of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, head, ear, mouth and teeth; cough, asthma, catarrh, fever, ague, stomach ache, fainting, dysentery, gripes, cholera, leprosy, boils, skin disease, consumption, epilepsy, ringworm, itch, scab, chapping, scabies, blood and bile disorders, diabetes, cancer, fistula; afflictions arising from bile, from phlegm, from wind, from their conjunction, from change of season, from careless behaviour, from assault, from the ripening of kamma; cold, heat, hunger, thirst, excrement and urine. Thus he dwells contemplating danger in this body. This is called the perception of danger.

And what is the perception of abandoning? Here a bhikkhu does not tolerate an arisen thought of sensuality but abandons it, dispels it, makes an end of it, brings it to non-existence; nor an arisen thought of ill will; nor an arisen thought of cruelty; nor evil, unwholesome states whenever they arise. This is called the perception of abandoning.

And what is mindfulness of breathing? Here a bhikkhu, gone to a forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, sits down, folds his legs crosswise, holds his body erect, and sets up mindfulness before him. Ever mindful he breathes in, mindful he breathes out. Breathing in long, he knows he breathes in long; and so through the sixteen steps, to contemplating relinquishment. This is called mindfulness of breathing.
