ชะยะปะริตตัง Jayaparittaṃ The Victory Protection Chanted at the close of the Seven Tamnan, and at ceremonies where a blessing is given. pages 172–174 51 verses

The Victory Protection closing the Seven Tamnan, turning the Buddha's victory into a blessing spoken over the hearer.

When chanted
Chanted at the close of the Seven Tamnan, and at ceremonies where a blessing is given.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The Seven Tamnan is the shorter of the two great paritta collections. Its texts are the same as those of the Twelve Tamnan; what differs is which are included and how far each is cut, and the book's three running orders shorten them further again.

The last and longest of the Seven Tamnan parittas at fifty-one units. It gathers up the closing material of the whole collection, which is why a reader keeps meeting familiar lines.

Meaning and purpose

The blessing works by likeness. The Protector of great compassion, having fulfilled all the perfections, attained the highest awakening — by the speaking of this truth, may the blessing of victory be yours. Nothing is said to pass from him to the hearer; the hearer is invited to stand in the same relation.

Then the middle, which relocates good fortune from the calendar to conduct: a good star, a good dawn, a good moment — and auspicious the act of body, of speech, of mind. The good day is made rather than found.

And the closing, which is where the whole collection ends: by the power of the paritta, may their misfortunes be destroyed. After an hour or more of chanting, the last thing said is a plain request on behalf of the people in the room — which is what they came for.
