The paritta of victory, which turns the Buddha's victory at the Bodhi tree into a blessing spoken over the hearer.
- When chanted
- Chanted at the close of the paritta service as the last of the twelve, and at ceremonies where a blessing is given.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The last of the twelve. Its opening verses are the same ones the book prints much earlier as the Victory Protection verses, so a reader will meet this text twice — once in the daily blessings and once here, closing the great collection.
What is added at the end is not in the earlier printing, and it is the reason this version runs longer.
Meaning and purpose
The blessing works by likeness, as it did before: the Protector of great compassion, having fulfilled all the perfections, reached the supreme awakening — by the speaking of this truth, may the blessing of victory be yours. Then, victorious at the foot of the Bodhi tree, so may you too be victorious.
Nothing is said to pass from him to the hearer. A true thing is stated, and the hearer is invited to stand in the same relation to it that he did.
The closing verses turn to particular people in a way the rest of the collection never does — wishes for a woman, that she be free of illness and happy together with all her kin, and then for the assembly, that having gained the goal they be happy and thriving in the Buddha's teaching. After twelve parittas addressed to beings, world-systems and armies, the last words are for the people actually in the room.
