Verses of blessing spoken over the hearer — victory at the Bodhi tree, a good dawn, and auspicious acts of body, speech and mind.
- When chanted
- Chanted after the verses of victory, continuing the sequence of blessing at a meal offering or a ceremony.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
This follows directly on from the eight verses of victory, and the change between them is a change of address. Those described what the Buddha did. These turn to the person standing in front of the reciters and say เต, yours.
The last six lines are a single triad said three times over, changing only the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha — the same refrain that closes the chant after this one, which is how the whole sequence is stitched together.
Meaning and purpose
The opening takes the Buddha's own victory and uses it as ground for a wish: victorious at the foot of the Bodhi tree, increasing the joy of the Sakyans — so may you too be victorious. The blessing works by likeness rather than by transfer. Nothing is said to pass from him to the hearer; the hearer is invited to stand in the same relation.
The middle is the best-known part and the most practical. A good star, a good blessing, a good dawn, a good rising, a good moment. Then, immediately: auspicious the act of body, auspicious the act of speech, auspicious the act of mind, auspicious your aspirations — and having done what is auspicious, one gains auspicious benefits. Good fortune is moved off the calendar and onto conduct. The good day is made rather than found, and that is the whole argument of the passage.
The closing triad then asks protection by the power of the Buddhas, of the Dhamma, of the Sangha. Coming where it does in a ceremony, this is the point at which attention turns from the tradition to the people in the room, and what it tells them is not that a day has been made lucky but that they will make it so themselves.
