กรรมวาจาอุปสมบท The Kammavācā of Ordination Chanted by the appointed monks at an ordination with one candidate. pages 295–296 63 verses

The formal act of ordination in its single-candidate form: the motion, the three announcements, and the silence that carries it.

When chanted
Chanted by the appointed monks at an ordination with one candidate.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The single-candidate version of the act printed a page later for two. The book gives both in full rather than asking anyone to adjust the Pali endings while the ceremony is running.

Sixty-three units, almost all of them repetition. The motion is put once and then announced three times, and the assembly is given three separate opportunities to object.

Meaning and purpose

The motion names everything that has to be established before the act is valid: who the candidate is, who the preceptor is, and that the bowl and robes are complete. It then closes by naming itself as the motion, so nobody can mistake what stage the ceremony has reached.

The three announcements repeat the same substance and each ends with the same invitation: whoever it is acceptable to, let him be silent; whoever it is not acceptable to, let him speak. Nothing is carried on a show of hands.

The closing lines record the outcome in the passive: it is acceptable to the Sangha, therefore it is silent — thus do I hold it. The person ordained becomes a bhikkhu at the moment somebody states, for the record, what nobody saying anything meant.
