A short exchange with Ānanda: good conduct of body, speech and mind should be done, and bad conduct abandoned.
- When chanted
- Chanted after its prefatory verse, among the short discourses.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The book prints its own reference. The discourse is two units long and is among the shortest in the collection.
Its form is an exchange rather than a teaching: the Buddha states something categorically, and Ānanda asks him to expand it.
Meaning and purpose
The word that carries it is เอกังเสนาหัง — categorically, one-sidedly, without qualification. The Buddha is elsewhere careful to say that most questions need distinguishing before they can be answered, and here he says the opposite.
What is stated so flatly is unremarkable in itself: good conduct of body, speech and mind should be done. The interest is entirely in the register — that this, and not much else, is offered without conditions.
Ānanda then asks what follows from such conduct, which is what turns the statement into a discourse. Two units, and the whole of it is one claim and one question about it.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Then the venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One, paid homage and sat down to one side. To him the Blessed One said this: 'Ānanda, I say categorically that misconduct of body, speech and mind should not be done.' 'Venerable sir, of that misconduct which the Blessed One has categorically declared should not be done — what danger is to be expected when it is done?' 'Ānanda, of that misconduct which I have categorically declared should not be done, this danger is to be expected: one blames oneself; on considering, the wise censure one; an evil report spreads abroad; one dies confused; and on the breaking up of the body, after death, one reappears in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, the lower world, hell.'

'Ānanda, I say categorically that good conduct of body, speech and mind should be done.' 'Venerable sir, of that good conduct which the Blessed One has categorically declared should be done — what benefit is to be expected when it is done?' 'Ānanda, of that good conduct which I have categorically declared should be done, this benefit is to be expected: one does not blame oneself; on considering, the wise praise one; a good report spreads abroad; one dies unconfused; and on the breaking up of the body, after death, one reappears in a good destination, a heavenly world.' This is what the Blessed One said. Gladdened, the venerable Ānanda delighted in the Blessed One's words.

Here ends the Discourse on What Should and Should Not Be Done.
