The Words of Rejoicing in the Kathina Spoken immediately after the kathina cloth has been determined, closing the ceremony. pages 308–309 2 verses

The two-part exchange in which the recipient of the kathina invites the Sangha to rejoice, and the Sangha answers that it does.

When chanted
Spoken immediately after the kathina cloth has been determined, closing the ceremony.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

Two lines, and they are a call and a response rather than a chant. The first is said by the monk who received the cloth; the second by everybody else.

อะนุโมทะนา is rejoicing in what somebody else has done — not congratulation, but taking a share in the good of it. It is the mechanism by which a gift to one monk becomes a gift the whole community has a part in.

Meaning and purpose

The wording of the two halves is identical except for two changes, and both are grammatical. The recipient says อาวุโส, friends, addressing those junior to him; the Sangha replies ภันเต, venerable sirs. And his อะนุโมทะถะ, rejoice, becomes their อะนุโมทามะ, we rejoice.

What is stated twice, once in each direction, is that the spreading of the kathina was ธัมมิโก, in accordance with the Dhamma. The point being confirmed is procedural correctness, not generosity.

That is what makes it worth saying aloud. A kathina wrongly spread brings none of the allowances it exists to bring, so the community puts on record, in one sentence and in both directions, that this one was done properly.

Atthataṃ āvuso saṅghassa kaṭhinaṃ, dhammiko kaṭhinatthāro anumodatha

The Saṅgha's kathina has been spread, friends; the spreading of the kathina is in accordance with the Dhamma. Rejoice in it. (say 3 times)

Atthataṃ bhante saṅghassa kaṭhinaṃ, dhammiko kaṭhinatthāro anumodāma

The Saṅgha's kathina has been spread, venerable sirs; the spreading of the kathina is in accordance with the Dhamma. We rejoice in it. (say 3 times)
