The Words of Announcing the Kathina, the Form for Two Monks Spoken at the kathina ceremony before the formal act, where two monks are available. page 305 6 verses

The shorter announcement, for a ceremony where only two monks divide the speaking between them.

When chanted
Spoken at the kathina ceremony before the formal act, where two monks are available.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The same announcement compressed for a smaller community. Where the four-monk form spends its length on the Buddha's ruling and the five benefits, this one keeps only what has to be said.

That the book prints both is a practical kindness. A monastery with two resident monks can still hold a kathina, and needs a form it can actually use.

Meaning and purpose

The first monk covers what took three parts in the longer form: whose gift it is, and that the cloth is pure, as though it had drifted through the sky and come to rest in the assembly. Then the request, put more loosely — whichever monk the assembled Sangha sees as fitting, let them together consent to grant it to him.

A small stage direction is printed with it: no sādhu needed. Even the usual response is dispensed with, because with two monks present there is no assembly to make it.

The second monk then names his choice and gives his reason — I consider it fitting for so-and-so, who has the mindfulness and understanding for it. In the four-monk form the reasoning is spread across several speakers and several paragraphs. Here one person says what he thinks, which is both shorter and, in a small community, harder.

This kathina cloth, together with all the accompanying requisites, belongs to ............. along with ............, who out of faith and diligence have together brought it as an offering to the community of monks who have kept the rains residence for the full three months in this monastery.

Now this kathina cloth is pure, as though it had drifted through the sky and come to rest in the assembly of the Saṅgha; it cannot be said to belong to any one monk in particular. The Buddha allowed that the whole Saṅgha should consent to grant it to one monk, so that he may carry out the spreading of the kathina as the Buddha allowed. And the commentators, who know the Buddha's intention, explained it thus: a monk endowed with the virtues of morality and learning, with mindfulness and understanding, able to know the eight matters beginning with the preliminary duties — that monk is fit to carry out the spreading of the kathina in accordance with what the Buddha allowed.

Now, whichever monk the assembled Saṅgha sees as fitting, let them together consent to grant it to that monk. (No sādhu needed)

This kathina cloth, with all its accompanying requisites, I consider fitting for ............., who has the mindfulness and understanding to carry out the spreading of the kathina correctly, in accordance with what the Buddha allowed. If any monk sees it as unfitting, let him object in the midst of the Saṅgha. (pause a moment) If it is seen as fitting, let all raise the sound of approval together. (Sādhu)
