The long form of the request for a teaching, telling the whole story of Brahmā's entreaty before asking.
- When chanted
- Spoken before a sermon on formal occasions, in place of the short request.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
Thirty units where the short form has four. As with the other pairs in this book, the long version does not add a different request — it tells the story the short one alludes to.
It ends by joining that story to the present room, which the short form never does.
Meaning and purpose
It opens exactly as the short form does, with Brahmā's request, and then goes on to what happened next: so it was that the Blessed One, unsurpassed, was entreated, and out of compassion, entering into pity for beings, he looked upon this world with the eye of wisdom.
That look is the moment the tradition turns on, and the long form is printed so that it can be recounted rather than assumed. Everything that follows in this book — every discourse, every paritta — depends on the decision made in that verse.
Then the join: and so this assembly has gathered here to hear the Dhamma. The room is placed at the end of a line that begins with Brahmā, and the request is made in the same terms as the short form — that the Sangha teach, and that everyone present attend closely and listen.
The chant

Brahmā ca lokādhipatī sahampati
Brahmā Sahampati, lord of the world,
Katañjalī andhivaraṃ ayācatha
with hands joined in reverence, made his request of the Excellent One:
สันตีธะ สัตตาปะระชักขะชาติกา
Santīdha sattāparajakkhajātikā
there are beings here with little dust in their eyes;
Desetu dhammaṃ anukampimaṃ pajaṃ.
may he teach the Dhamma, out of compassion for these people.

So it was that, by Brahmā, honoured throughout the world,

the Blessed One, unsurpassed, was entreated;

and out of compassion, entering into pity for beings,

he looked upon this world with the eye of wisdom.

truly present, worthy of the supramundane awakening,

those of little dust who could be made to understand;

and so he consented to the request.

Perceiving only trouble, I did not speak the practised Dhamma,

the excellent Dhamma, among human beings, O Brahmā.

Thereafter the great seer, of great compassion,

the Blessed One, did the work of a Fully Awakened One:

beginning with the turning of the wheel of the true Dhamma,

he established the supreme Dhamma of the dispensation.

Training those to be trained, he freed the beings capable of it

from the suffering of saṃsāra, and many by that means;

and the lamp of the true Dhamma, threefold, in the world

he set rightly turning, for the welfare of all.

The fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth of the fortnight —

these are the times appointed by the Buddha for hearing the true Dhamma.

Now this fifteenth day has come, marked out and auspicious,

and so this assembly has gathered here to hear the Dhamma.

It would be good if the venerable Bhikkhu Saṅgha would give a Dhamma teaching,
Ayañca parisā sabbā aṭṭhikatvā suṇātu taṃ.
and may this whole assembly attend closely and listen to it.
