The request for the ordinary eight precepts, each to be kept separately, said three times.
- When chanted
- Spoken by lay people asking a monk for the eight precepts outside an observance day.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The third of the four requests on these pages, and the eight-precept counterpart of the ordinary five. The distinguishing phrase is identical — to keep each one separately.
It is used when somebody wants the eight but is not undertaking them as an uposatha.
Meaning and purpose
The wording differs from the ordinary five in one word: eight in place of five. Everything else, including the request for the refuges in the same breath, is unchanged.
Keeping them separately again means each stands alone. Somebody who eats after noon has broken that one rule and not the undertaking as a whole.
Set beside the uposatha form on the facing page, the pair shows the tradition distinguishing two quite different things that a bystander would see as identical — eight rules, kept by a lay person, for a period. What separates them is only which sentence was said at the start.
