The lay request for the chanting of the parittas, made three times with a different danger named each time.
- When chanted
- Spoken by a lay person to the Sangha to request a paritta chanting, before the monks begin.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
Every running order in this book begins the same way: when the layman has finished requesting the parittas. These are the words of that request.
It is three couplets, and the first line of each is identical. Only the danger changes.
Meaning and purpose
The unchanging line states the purpose twice over, negatively and positively: for the warding off of misfortune, for the achieving of every good fortune. Both halves are asked for every time.
What changes is the third clause, and the three make a set: for the destruction of all suffering; of all fear; of all illness. ทุกขะ, ภะยะ, โรคะ — the doctrinal, the mental and the bodily.
Then the imperative, which is the same in all three and is genuinely an instruction: ปะริตตัง พ๎รูถะ มังคะลัง, chant the auspicious paritta. The whole protective apparatus of this book is set in motion by a lay person telling the monks to start.
