Notes on how to shorten the funeral chanting, what to use when the cloth is missing, and how to hold the hand when drawing the paṃsukūla.

When chanted
Read by those conducting a funeral chanting, alongside the procedure it explains.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

Five paragraphs of plain Thai, and no Pali at all. This is the book talking to whoever has to run the occasion, about the things that go wrong.

It sits with the funeral material and explains the procedure printed beside it, which is why it reads less like a chant than like the back of a service card.

Meaning and purpose

The first note is about time. The full form is given; to shorten it, leave out particular passages. A book of this kind rarely says which parts may be dropped, and this one does.

The second is about equipment, and is the most human line in the section: where there is no connecting cloth, the sacred thread may be used instead. The ceremony is not to be abandoned for want of a prop.

The rest is posture and attention — how the fan is set up, and that one should be mindful and clearly aware that when taking hold of the cloth the hand must be turned palm upward. A detail that small, written down, tells you it has been got wrong often enough to be worth printing.

The chant

This chanting of the mātikā and the paṃsukūla according to the procedure is the full form. To shorten it, leave out the Vipassanābhūmi passage: chant the Dhammasaṅgaṇī mātikā and then go straight on to the Paṭṭhāna mātikā.

2

Where there is no connecting cloth, the sacred thread may be used instead. If there is no cloth to lay out for the paṃsukūla, the monks take hold of the connecting cloth or the sacred thread for it.

3

While chanting the mātikā and the paṃsukūla, if there is a ceremonial fan it is set up for both. The difference is that for the chanting the fan is held in the right hand, while for the paṃsukūla it is held in the left so that the cloth may be drawn with the right; and for the blessing it is held in the right hand again, as usual.

4

One should be mindful and clearly aware that when taking hold of the cloth to draw the paṃsukūla, the hand must be turned palm upward, not palm downward. Having drawn it, take the cloth and set it at one's side, and afterwards keep it as one's own. As for this connecting cloth or sacred thread — reaching across it to take anything is absolutely forbidden.

5

For the drawing of the great paṃsukūla, which the host lays out on the coffin before the cremation is performed, there is no chanting of the mātikā at all. Holding the fan in the left hand, go straight up and draw the paṃsukūla; when it is drawn, carry the cloth down. The host who laid out the cloth must stand waiting until the monks have finished drawing it, and while the monks pronounce the words of the paṃsukūla, should listen with palms together and direct the merit to the dead.
