Five short formulas by which a monk determines each of his requisites as the one he is entitled to keep.
- When chanted
- Spoken when a bowl or a robe is taken into use, naming which requisite it is to be.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
อธิษฐาน is determining: formally deciding what a thing is. A monk may keep one bowl and three robes, and an item has to be assigned to one of those places before it can be used.
The book prints one line for each, and names them in Thai beside the Pali — bowl, outer robe, upper robe, inner robe, and the rains-bathing cloth.
Meaning and purpose
The five lines are identical apart from the object: I determine this bowl; I determine this outer robe; and so on. Only one is said at a time, over the thing in hand.
What determination does is close a slot. Once this cloth is the upper robe, no other cloth is, and any further cloth acquired has to be dealt with some other way — which is what the formulas printed immediately after this one are for.
The fifth entry is the one that shows how specific the system is. The rains-bathing cloth is allowed only for part of the year, and it gets a determination of its own rather than being folded into the robes.
