คำอธิษฐานผ้ากฐิน The Words for Determining the Kathina Cloth Spoken by the monk who has been given the kathina cloth, immediately after the formal act. page 308 3 verses

Three short formulas by which the monk who receives the kathina cloth determines it as one of his three robes.

When chanted
Spoken by the monk who has been given the kathina cloth, immediately after the formal act.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

What follows the Sangha's decision is the recipient's own act. อธิษฐาน is determining — formally deciding what a thing is to be — and a robe has to be determined before it can be used.

The book prints one formula for each of the three robes, and names them: the outer robe, the upper robe, and the inner robe. Each is marked to be said three times.

Meaning and purpose

The three lines are identical apart from the robe named: with this outer robe I spread the kathina, and so for the upper and the inner. Only one of the three is actually said, according to which garment the cloth has been made into.

กะฐินัง อัตถะรามิ — I spread the kathina — uses the old image the ceremony is named for. The kathina was the frame on which cloth was stretched to be sewn, and the phrase keeps the workshop in view long after the sewing stopped being done that way.

Said three times, by one person, immediately after a decision the whole community took in silence, it completes a sequence that has moved from the donors to the Sangha to a single monk and a single piece of cloth.
