What a monk is told immediately after ordination: the four supports he lives on, and the four acts that would end his monkhood.
- When chanted
- Spoken to a newly ordained monk by the preceptor, immediately after the formal act.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
อนุศาสน์ is the admonition given the moment somebody becomes a bhikkhu. The Blessed One allowed that, having ordained, the four supports and the four things not to be done should be declared — and the text says so in its second line.
Nothing here is optional or aspirational. These are the terms of the life, delivered to a person who has been a monk for about a minute.
Meaning and purpose
The four supports name what the life is founded on, each with the same structure: going forth depends on almsfood gathered in scraps, on rag-robes, on dwelling at the foot of a tree, on medicine of fermented cow's urine — in that you should make an effort for life. Then, each time, the allowances: a Sangha meal, cloth of linen or cotton, a dwelling, ghee and honey. The minimum is stated first and the permitted comforts second, which is the whole arrangement in miniature.
The four things not to be done are given with an image apiece, and the images are all of irreversibility. A man with his head cut off cannot live on. A withered leaf freed from its stalk cannot become green again. A flat stone broken in two cannot be joined. A palm tree cut off at the crown cannot grow again. Each is followed by the same line: that is not to be done by you for life.
Then, at the very end, something else entirely. Virtue, concentration and wisdom were well proclaimed — concentration steeped in virtue is of great fruit, wisdom steeped in concentration is of great fruit, and the mind steeped in wisdom is rightly freed from the taints. Having spent most of its length on what would end this life, the admonition closes by naming what it is for, and its last words are an instruction to strive with diligence.
