The offering of homage to the Triple Gem in the translated printing, with Thai beneath each Pali line.
- When chanted
- Chanted at the opening of a service; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The same chant that opens the whole book at page 1, printed again here with its Thai. The two printings differ in one small mark, which is recorded in the file's notes.
It is the first chant of the translated half, so it is where a reader working through the second pass begins.
Meaning and purpose
The Pali is unchanged: the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha named by their epithets, the offering made with these gifts, and then the request that the Blessed One accept them though he attained final Nibbāna long ago.
The Thai rendering is not literal and is more helpful for that. Where the Pali says อะระหัง, the Thai expands it — having quenched entirely the fires of defilement and of suffering — so the epithet arrives as a description rather than a title.
Reading the two printings side by side is the best short demonstration of what this book is doing. The same words, chanted the same way, first as sound to be learned and then as meaning to be followed.
The chant
