คำบูชาพระรัตนตรัย kam buu-chaa prá-rát-dtà-ná-dtrai The Words of Offering to the Triple Gem Chanted at the opening of the evening service; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation. pages 224–225 8 verses

The offering to the Triple Gem for the evening service, in the translated printing.

When chanted
Chanted at the opening of the evening service; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

From page 193 the book prints its material a second time with a Thai rendering beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first.

This is the fourth printing of this text in the book — morning and evening, each pass — which is what a service book does rather than cross-reference. The page has to work for somebody chanting from it.

Meaning and purpose

The first three clauses identify rather than address: the Buddha as worthy and perfectly enlightened by himself, the Dhamma as well proclaimed, the Sangha as having practised well. Only in the fourth are they gathered, and only in the fifth does anything happen.

The second movement turns and asks, and grants at once what might be passed over — that the Blessed One long ago attained final Nibbāna — and asks anyway, on the ground of his compassion for later generations. The gifts are described just as candidly: poor gifts though they are.

That candour is the point. It is not an attempt to reach someone, and it does not claim the offering is worth much. What is being arranged is the assembly, and the closing line names who benefits — not the one receiving, but us.

ปัจฉิมาชะนะตานุกัมปะมานะสา,

Pacchimājanatānukampamānasā,

ทรงมีพระหฤทัยอนุเคราะห์แก่พวกข้าพเจ้า, อันเป็นชนรุ่นหลัง,

whose heart is compassionate towards us, who are of a later generation,

7

อิเม สักกาเร ทุคคะตะปัณณาการะภูเต ปะฏิคคัณหาตุ,

may the Blessed One accept these offerings, which are the poor gifts of the needy,
