A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

This entry opens with a note about itself: only what differs will be given, and what does not differ is left to the two methods already printed. The book is refusing to reprint what a reader already has.

That makes it the shortest way into the ordination material for somebody who has read the pages before it, and nearly unusable for anybody who has not.

Meaning and purpose

What does differ is the number, and every word that agrees with it. มะยัง for we, plural verb endings throughout, and the request for the going forth made by two voices at once.

The substance is unchanged: refuge in the Blessed One, though he attained final Nibbāna long ago; and then the request — having taken these ochre cloths, give us the going forth out of compassion. The cloths are in the candidates' hands as they ask.

Said three times, as everything in this ceremony is. Two people asking together for something that will be granted to them individually, in words that have to agree in number throughout, is exactly the sort of thing this book prints a separate page for.

Only what differs will be given. What does not differ, and the explanations of the various procedures which are the same as the two methods already given, will not be repeated — please turn back and study them there. Even the request for ordination together (saṅghambhante) has already been explained at the end of the request for ordination in the Esāhaṃ form.

We go for refuge to that Blessed One, though he attained final Nibbāna long ago, and to the Dhamma and to the community of monks. May we obtain the going forth in that Blessed One's Dhamma and Discipline; may we obtain ordination.
