The short form for asking pardon of the elders as a body, with the elder's reply and a note on the singular.
- When chanted
- Spoken to the assembled elders, commonly before the rains or at occasions where the community gathers.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The shortest of the pardon formulas in this book, and the one for everyday use. Where the address to a Great Elder runs to eleven units, this does the same work in one sentence.
It is printed as an exchange, with the elder's answer and the junior monks' reply given as part of the entry rather than left to be known.
Meaning and purpose
What is asked pardon for is described only by how it was done: through heedlessness, by way of the three doors. No offence is named, and the three doors — body, speech and mind — between them cover everything a person could have done.
The elder's reply is the part worth noticing: ahaṃ khamāmi, āyasmantehipi me khamitabbaṃ — I forgive, and you should forgive me too. Pardon is not granted downward. It is exchanged, and the senior asks for it in the same breath he gives it.
The closing note handles the grammar: this is for several monks asking together, and for one alone the wording changes as usage requires. As everywhere in this book, the practical adjustment is printed rather than assumed.
The chant

There pamādena, dvārattayena kataṃ, sabbaṃ aparādhaṃ khamatu no bhante.
Venerable sir, may you forgive us every offence done towards the elder through heedlessness, by way of the three doors.
The elder answers ahaṃ khamāmi, āyasmantehipi me khamitabbaṃ.
The junior monks reply khamāma bhante.
This is for several monks asking pardon together. For one alone the wording changes as usage requires: khamatu no bhante becomes khamatu me bhante; āyasmantehipi me khamitabbaṃ becomes āyasmatāpi me khamitabbaṃ; khamāma bhante becomes khamāmi bhante. And there ye pamādena is for an elder of ten rains or more; below ten rains it becomes āyasmante pamādena.
