The invitation by which a monk asks the community to tell him anything they have seen, heard or suspected of him, said three times.
- When chanted
- Spoken at the end of the rains retreat, by each monk in turn, in place of the usual uposatha recitation.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
ปวารณา is an invitation, and what is invited is criticism. The three months of living at close quarters end with everybody asking to be told what everybody else noticed.
It replaces the usual recitation of the rules on that day, which means the community's most formal act at the close of the year is not a reading but a request.
Meaning and purpose
The three grounds are named in ascending order of difficulty: ทิฏเฐนะ วา สุเตนะ วา ปะริสังกายะ วา — seen, or heard, or suspected. The third is the one that opens the door widest, and it is included deliberately.
What is asked for is not a report but an intervention, and the reason given is affective rather than procedural: let the venerable ones speak to me out of compassion. Being told is treated as a kindness done to the person told.
Said three times, by every monk in turn, in front of everyone who has lived beside him for three months. The formula is short because the difficulty is not in the words.
