The preceptor's address to the assembly presenting his candidates and asking the Sangha to receive them, answered with a single word.
- When chanted
- Spoken at an ordination by the preceptor, before the formal act is put.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
เผดียง is informing or notifying the Sangha. The preceptor is the monk who takes responsibility for the candidates, and this is where he says so in front of everybody.
It is longer than the motions around it because it is not a motion. It is a statement of who these people are, whose they are, and what is being asked.
Meaning and purpose
He names them as his own — these two novices are my candidates, seeking ordination and asking it of the Sangha. The relationship is declared before anything is requested, and it is a lasting one: a preceptor remains answerable for those he presents.
The address is made to the assembly as friends and as venerable sirs, both forms appearing, because a Sangha contains monks both junior and senior to the speaker.
The whole passage is answered by one word said by everybody at once: สาธุ. It is not consent to the ordination, which comes later and by silence. It is only agreement that the matter may proceed, and the book gives it a line of its own.

Now, friends (venerable sirs), these two novices named Puṇṇa and Subha are my candidates, seeking ordination and asking it of the Saṅgha. I request this whole Saṅgha: please, friends, let this whole Saṅgha question them on the obstructing conditions, know their readiness, and ordain them by a formal act with a motion and three announcements, unshakeable and befitting the occasion. Let the act be concluded.
