คำพระอุปัชฌายะกล่าวเผดียงสงฆ์ The Words of the Preceptor Informing the Saṅgha Spoken at an ordination with one candidate, before the formal act is put. page 294 10 verses

The preceptor's address presenting a single candidate to the assembly and asking that he be received.

When chanted
Spoken at an ordination with one candidate, before the formal act is put.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The single-candidate form of the preceptor's address. Where the motions around it are procedural, this is the one place in the ceremony where a named person speaks for another and takes responsibility for him.

The preceptor is the monk the candidate will depend on afterwards, so what he says here is not a recommendation but the beginning of an obligation.

Meaning and purpose

He names the candidate as his own — my candidate, seeking ordination and asking it of the Sangha. The possessive is doing real work: from here on, the candidate's conduct reflects on the man who presented him.

The address is made in the plural to an assembly containing monks both senior and junior to him, and the book prints both forms of address accordingly.

The assembly answers with one word, said together. It is not consent to the ordination — that comes later and by silence — but agreement that the matter may go forward, which is a smaller and more easily given thing.

อิทานิ โข อาวุโส (ภันเต) อะยัง โอภาโส นามะ สามะเณโร มะมะ อุปะสัมปะทาเปกโข อุปะสัมปะทัง อากังขะมาโน,

Idāni kho āvuso (bhante) ayaṃ obhāso nāma sāmaṇero mama upasampadāpekkho upasampadaṃ ākaṅkhamāno,

Now, friend (venerable sir), this novice named Obhāsa is my candidate, seeking ordination and asking it of the Saṅgha. I request this whole Saṅgha: please, friend, let this whole Saṅgha question this novice named Obhāsa on the obstructing conditions, know his readiness, and ordain him by a formal act with a motion and three announcements, unshakeable and befitting the occasion. Let the act be concluded.
