คำประกาศอุโบสถ kam bprà-gàat u-boo-sòt The Announcement of the Uposatha Spoken on the observance day before the precepts are requested, to tell the assembly what day it is and what is about to be undertaken. page 10 5 verses

The announcement made before the eight precepts are undertaken, stating that today is an observance day and calling those present to keep it.

When chanted
Spoken on the observance day before the precepts are requested, to tell the assembly what day it is and what is about to be undertaken.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

อุโบสถ, Uposatha, is the observance day that falls at the quarters of the lunar month. On it lay people may undertake eight precepts rather than the usual five, for one night and one day, and spend the day at the monastery hearing the Dhamma. This passage is the announcement made before any of that begins.

The Thai printed with it is not a translation. The book sets the whole Pali as one block and the whole คำแปล as another, and the Thai is a free and much expanded rendering — it opens with a preamble that has no Pali behind it at all, and where the Pali says only that each abstention should be made the object of the mind, the Thai spells out all eight of them one by one. The pairing of Pali units to Thai chunks in this edition was made by meaning rather than by line.

The two layers also sit on different pages: all the Pali is on page 10, while the Thai runs over onto page 11.

Meaning and purpose

The first line does something no other chant in this part of the book does — it states the date. Today is the fifteenth day of the lunar fortnight. The observance is fixed to the calendar rather than to inclination, and saying the date aloud is what separates this day from the one before it.

The second and third lines give the reason and then the invitation: such a day is the time appointed by the Buddha for hearing the Dhamma, and for that same purpose the time of the Uposatha for laymen and laywomen; come then, let all of us gathered here keep it for this night and this day. The period is bounded on purpose. What is being proposed is a day, not a change of life.

The fourth line is the method — mark out the period, make each abstention the object of the mind, keep the mind undistracted — and the fifth is the sentence people remember: for to us who have reached such an Uposatha as this, may our life not be barren of fruit. That is why the announcement is made at all. It puts an ordinary day on the record as one that could be spent or used.
