The eight precepts undertaken one by one, each with a Thai gloss beside it, closing with a line taking all eight together.
- When chanted
- Repeated line by line after the monk who administers them, once the precepts have been requested.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
This is the taking half of the exchange whose asking half is printed a page earlier. The eight are the same eight kept on the observance day, and appear elsewhere in this book in their bare form.
What is different here is that the book sets a Thai gloss in brackets after each Pali line. Somebody using this page is being helped to understand what they are saying as they say it, which is not true of most pages in this book.
Meaning and purpose
Each line ends the same way — สิกขาปะทัง สะมาทิยามิ, I undertake the training rule. The formula is first-person and singular throughout: the monk gives the words, but nobody is put under anything.
The bracketed Thai does not translate the Pali so much as unpack it. Where the Pali says abstain from unchastity, the Thai spells out what is meant, and the same for eating at the wrong time and for high and luxurious seats.
The last line gathers them: I undertake these eight training rules, said three times. Having taken them individually, the speaker takes them as a set — which is what allows the whole day to be spoken of afterwards as one undertaking rather than eight.
